The inaugural meeting of the County Health & Wellbeing Board meeting was held on the 15th June 2011 and minutes will be circulated soon; however, representatives have been tasked to provide (by the 30th June):-

1. The three priorities you believe the Board should focus on, with the following information

Why are these your chosen priorities

What is already happening in respect of these priorities?

How can the Health and Wellbeing Board make a difference/add value in each case?

What evidence or data can you provide that relates to your priorities?

2. The five principles that should underpin the way the Board works.

We appreciate this is a tall order across the VCS but please contact Hilary Spencer, chief.exec@cvs-arunwide.org.uk or Janet Brown, janetbrown@hacvs.org.uk with your views by Friday 24th June. This will allow us time to distil 3 from these and re-circulate as widely as we can before submission on the 30th June.

COMMISSION WARNS OF BOGUS TELEPHONE CALLS

The Charity Commission has been made aware of a scam involving people being telephoned by individuals claiming to represent the Charity Commission. In the phone calls these individuals claim to be from the "debt collection department" of the Commission and they demand payments for various services and advertisements.

Some of the bogus calls have demanded payments of thousands of pounds for various services and advertisements. The Commission has been contacted by a number of people who have received calls of this nature and has already reported this matter to the police.

It is important to be clear that:
• Any call from someone claiming to work with or on behalf of the Charity Commission, and claiming any payment in a threatening way, is clearly bogus;
• The Charity Commission does not charge for any of its services to charities; it does not get involved in debt collection either directly or through contracting third parties to do so, and nor does it collect debt on behalf of charities;
• You should immediately report these sorts of incidents to the police, and the Charity Commission would also like to be informed where its name is being used for suspected fraudulent purposes.
Andrew Hind, Chief Executive of the Charity Commission said;
“I am outraged that individuals are misusing the good name of the Charity Commission in this way. I would strongly urge anyone to contact the police if they receive one of these calls and to please notify us as well.”

Our advice to charities is:
• When you speak to any member of staff from the Commission they will always be prepared to give their name, telephone number and email address;
• Commission email addresses always end with the domain name @charitycommission.gsi.gov.uk;
• Check the number of any suspect caller against the direct dial telephone codes for our offices; these are London 0207 674…, Liverpool 0151 703…, Taunton 01823 345… , Newport 01633 2255…
The best way to contact the Charity Commission is by email or if you need to speak to someone urgently you can call the contact centre on 0845 300 0218. Lines are open from 08:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday, except national holidays.

7. THE CONGREGATIONAL SINGERS ARE PERFORMING A SUMMER CONCERT
IN AID OF WORTHING & DISTRICT SCOPE
7pm, Saturday 21st August
Fitzalan Howard Centre, Pavilion Road, Worthing
Sing along to classics such as
“A spoonful of sugar” “Over the Rainbow”
“Some enchanted evening”
“Buttercup song”                 “Consider Yourself”
Tickets £4, Raffle & cash bar on the night
Please contact 01903 522366 or 01903 821437 for tickets

8. RICHARD JEFFERIES DAY
2.00pm Saturday 14th August
Meet at Broadwater Parish Rooms, Broadwater Street West.
Talk and readings on the works of this celebrated Victorian naturalist.
A visit to his grave in Broadwater Cemetery and an optional Downland excursion.

9. REACHING FOR GOLD IS BACK…AND BETTER!

Reaching for Gold is a fantastic opportunity for your young people to work with a top South East Company and Voluntary or Community Sector organisation to develop a project of their own creation.

The process is very simple – we want groups of up to ten, 14-19 year olds to have an innovative idea which will bring about a positive change to society. The idea could be based on communities, youth, innovative access or a mixture of the three topics.

Once the idea has been developed, ask your young people to fill out our application form and submit it before the 29th November.

We will select the best ideas to become our finalist and they will be given
hi-tec prizes and linked to a set of mentors. Between January and March
all the finalist teams will develop their idea into a project and get the chance to put their project before a panel of judges to win cash to make the project into a reality at the end of March.

We’ve listened to feedback from last year and in running this year’s competition we have:

1. Extended the time frame for applications and mentoring sessions
2. Included cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places
3. Organised additional mentoring sessions after the Grand Final to help
the young people continue their project.
4. BIG LUNCH
On Sunday 18th July you are invited to have lunch with your neighbours – in streets, parks, gardens, car parks... The best part of a million people did it last year and loved it. Join them for the second annual event and help put a smile back on Britain's face. It is a wonderful opportunity for community groups to let the neighbours know what they are up to.
Want to do The Big Lunch? Plonk in your postcode onto Website: http://www.thebiglunch.com/map/find-a-big-lunch.php to see if there's anything going on in your neighbourhood. If there isn't, why not be bold and plant the first flag? You won't be alone because we'll put other interested locals in touch to help make the magic happen on the day.
There is a step by step guide but as no two Lunches are the same, it is not the definitive guide but should point you in the right direction. Website: http://www.thebiglunch.com/how-to-start-a-big-lunch/step-by-step-guide.php
You can find Big Lunch leaflets, posters and a checklist – to download, print and use to start your own local publicity campaign at Website: http://www.thebiglunch.com/how-to-start-a-big-lunch/toolkit.php
The Big Lunch is run by the Eden Project, with the support of a family of partners.

3. VOLUNTEERING ENGLAND LAUNCHES TWO VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT INITIATIVES
New Support Resource for People Managing Volunteers
Volunteering England’s new Volunteer Management Portal, launched this today, acts as a gateway to the world of volunteer management with links to over a thousand resources across England.
This means that - for the first time - information on support, training and development opportunities for people managing volunteers is available to view in one single place.
If you work with volunteers, or know someone who does, this invaluable new resource will help you locate a wide variety of training providers and consultants, support and development opportunities.
Visit the portal at http://www.volunteering.org.uk/vmportal
A different kind of investment – what does your organisation stand to gain?
Volunteering England has launched the Value Volunteer Management Campaign to increase awareness of the value and importance of investing in volunteer management. Many key organisations have already shown support, including the BBC, Microsoft, Barnardo’s, RSPB, National Trust and PDSA.
These organisations know that investing in professional and strategic volunteer management really boosts the value they gain from volunteering, leading to increased budgets, raised organisational profile, strengthened service provision, improved community relations and much, much more.
Visit the campaign Website: http://www.volunteering.org.uk/valuevolunteermanagement and find out what your organisation stands to gain. You can show your commitment to volunteer management by signing the online endorsement, or by providing a quote or case study.
Both these initiatives are funded by the Office for Civil Society as part of Capacitybuilders’ Volunteer Management Programme.
For portal related enquiries please contact Email: VMportal@volunteeringengland.org
To find out more about the campaign contact Email: valueVM@volunteeringengland.org

4. WHAT IS A COMMUNITY SENTENCE?
THE LOCAL CRIME COMMUNITY SENTENCE PROJECT (LCCS)
A JOINT VENTURE BY MAGISTRATES AND PROBATION OFFICERS TO INCREASE THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF COMMUNITY SENTENCES.

This is a lively and interactive presentation where members of the audience are invited to express their own opinions about the sentencing of offenders. Its aim is to increase awareness of what takes place in the criminal courts and to provide a greater understanding of how the system works.

We are looking for community groups, colleges and Sixth Forms who think that they would benefit from such a presentation. The presentation ideally suits up to 40 people in order to be rewarding for everyone involved. However larger numbers are not a problem as we can adjust the programme to suit any audience.

The project involves a magistrate and a probation member of staff giving a presentation to community groups. The presentation includes a description of an offender and a crime they have committed, and a discussion about the possible sentencing options. It’s an opportunity for your group to 'be the judge', sentencing a serious crime and deciding whether the offender goes to prison or is given a community sentence.

How often has a headline like "Thug Walks Free After Attack" enraged your sense of fairness and damaged your confidence in the Criminal Justice System?

However, when you then read a little further you find out that actually the offender has been given a sentence which means over a two year period he has to do 300 hours of unpaid work for the community, has a curfew of 12 hours a day for three months and has to attend and cooperate with programmes to deal with his offending behaviour.

Local Crime Community Sentence (LCCS), gives the community the opportunity to find out more about the Sentencing process in Court and Community Sentences in particular.

A Magistrate and a Probation Officer lead you through a case:
• How it came to court
• What were the circumstance
• Who was the victim
• What about the offender
• What does the Law say

You have the opportunity to say what you would do given all of the information, and not just the headline. Presentations take about an hour and are interactive.
If you would like a presentation to your group please contact
Alistair Parkin, Community Engagement Officer Tel: 01273 263190

Next Forum: 12.30pm, Tuesday 21st September 2010
Friends  (Quaker) Meeting House,
Rear of 34 Mill Road (easy parking in West Avenue)
Please book your place in advance, contact: Sophie Rider at WCVS on 01903 528620
Or email sophie.wcvs@btconnect.com

Worthing Council for Voluntary Service, Colonnade House, Warwick Street, Worthing, BN11 3DH
Tel: 01903 528620 Email: worthingcvs@btconnect.com
(Registered Charity No. 1107753 Registered Company No. 5274460)
